Shermitias are traditional military competitions of the Don Cossacks, historically arranged on holidays and worn in ceremonial character. The Cossacks competed in horsemanship, horse race, equestrian and pedestrian possession of weapons, wrestling and fist fights. Restored Shermitzia held in the Rostov region since 2009.

Today, Shermitia is one of the largest international events in the field of traditional contests held in Russia.

The program of the Games is rich and diverse and includes the ancient Cossack military rites, competitions in equestrian and pedestrian possession of weapons - saber, pike, traditional bow; dzhigitovka, martial arts, power competitions; folk and theatrical performances, performances of ryleshnik (performers on the old Don Cossack instrument "snout" - wheel lira); traditional children's games and fun, mastery lessons and a fair of folk arts and crafts; preparation and tasting of national dishes; lectures and exhibitions on the history, culture, traditions, customs and rituals of the Cossacks; national costume contest.

Every year, the Games gather over 10,000 spectators from both Russia and the near and far abroad. Shermitia is visited by the descendants of the first-wave Cossacks from England, France, Canada, the USA, Serbia, Germany, Nekrasov Cossacks, tourists from China, New Zealand. Since 2015, athletes from Scotland and Wales have taken part in the competition. Shermitias are widely covered by the media, both federal, regional, and foreign - at various times Russia Today, Reuters, Russia Beyond, SkyNews, ZDF worked at the Games. In 2017, the world-famous watch brand Longines acted as the general partner of the Shermiy Cup in Dzhigitovka.
